THE CERRO SANTUARIO

The area of ​​the Cerro Santuario area, the place where the Lady of Baza and the Torso of the Warrior of Baza appeared, must have been the necropolis of the Iberian settlement of Basti, one of the oldest in Spain.

The figure of the Lady of Baza is the main element of the CIYA (Interpretation Center of Archaeological Sites), a center for the dissemination, research and better understanding of the social, cultural, economic and religious processes of the Iberian culture from the origin of the settlement.

It is located in the vicinity of the archaeological sites of Basti, which can be visited and have interactive information elements.

Proof of the relevance that the city of Baza has always had is that it was almost named the eighth capital of the province.

DAMA DE BAZA'S CHAMBER

The Lady of Baza was discovered in 1971 on the Cerro del Santuario de Baza during archaeological excavations directed by Francisco José Presedo Velo and Antonio Arribas Palau.

The tomb dates from the second half of the 4th century BC, belonging to the Iberian culture. Regarding the Figure of the Lady of Baza:

It is a life-size Iberian sculpture that represents a woman sitting on a kind of throne or ceremonial chair. The sculpture is carved from limestone and shows great artistic mastery. The Lady holds an object in her right hand and wears an elaborate outfit, with finely sculpted details.
